Effect of diazepam (Valium) on dialysable thyroxime.

چکیده
Introduction Increasing numbers of patients are receiving treatment with the tranquillizing drugs, and patients referred to hospital with suspected thyrotoxicosis are often taking such drugs. It is important to know what effects these drugs have on tests of thyroid function if diagnostic confusion is to be avoided. Diazepam is a commonly prescribed centrallyacting tranquillizer. Published work on its effect on thyroid function is both scanty and conflicting. It has been said to inhibit thyroxine formation (Todays Drugs, 1969, Brit. med. J.). Both diazepam (Valium) and chlordiazepoxide (Librium) have been shown to depress the uptake of iodine by the thyroid gland in thyrotoxicosis and thus obscure the diagnosis of hyperthyroidism (Harvey, 1967; Turner & Sneddon, 1967). Clarke & Hall (1970), using radioactive iodine uptake and clearance, protein-bound iodine and tri-iodothyronine resin uptake, have investigated fourteen euthyroid and six mildly thyrotoxic patients and could detect no significant difference in the results of these tests before and during treatment with chlordiazepoxide over a 4-week period. Mazzaferri & Skillman (1969) found significant day-to-day fluctuations in radio-active iodine uptake and protein-bound iodine tests in twentyfour healthy adults on diazepam. However, they were unable to confirm that thyroid function was altered by diazepam. The conflicting reports concerning the effects of diazepam on thyroid function may be due to an

متن کاملPharmacological manipulation of sexual behaviour in stallions.
Series of experiments and clinical trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of psychoneurotropic agents on sexual behaviour of stallions. The benzodiazepine derivative, diazepam (Valium), effectively reversed experimentally suppressed precopulatory arousal and response. Diazepam treatment also blocked the negative effect of novel environment on sexual response. The dibenzazepines imipramin...
متن کاملCorory vasodilatation following diazepam (Valium).
1. The effects of diazepam (Valium) on coronary and systemic vascular resistance were studied in anaesthetized dogs on cardiopulmonary bypass under conditions of constant heart rate and aortic pressure.2. Pharmacological doses of diazepam uniformly produced coronary vasodilation lasting 30 min; systemic vascular resistance also decreased, but to lesser degree.3. When coronary blood flow was mai...

A study was undertaken to evaluate diazepam (Valium) and trimeprazine (Vallergan) for oral pre-anaesthetic medication in children undergoing adenotonsillectomy, and their effect on blood loss during surgery. The method of anaesthesia and observation was standard throughout. Both premedicants were considered by anaesthetists and nursing staff to be equally satisfactory. However, salivation was t...

A longitudinal panel study examined the effects of actual use of diazepam (Valium) on subjective reports of life quality, affect, performance, stress, social support, control, coping and other variables related to mental health. Standardized interviews were conducted with 675 persons from the Detroit Metropolitan Area. Based on prescription records, diazepam users and nonusers were selected to ...
